To build a bridge, both sides must be willing to connect. Yet even when the desire is there, the ‘how’ factor can remain elusive.

A superyacht is the realisation of an owner’s dream – a vision shaped over years of effort, talent and resources. But somewhere along the way, that dream blurs. By the time the yacht is delivered, and the maiden voyage begins, every build-phase decision is left in the hands of the operational crew. If construction and operation were truly connected, this transition would be effortless. Instead, a disconnect remains – one that we, as an industry, must finally address.

It would be only natural that the space you design is one you can relate to, wouldn’t it? This makes perfect sense for guest areas of a superyacht as every yacht designer, while not perhaps having lived on board, has likely stayed in a luxury hotel or resort. However, apart from the occasional lunch in the crew mess, many designers simply don’t know – and can’t know – what it truly feels like to live and work on board. But that’s exactly the kind of knowledge we need.

My name is Meeli and I was born in a little University town in South-Estonia. It was kind of self-evident that I joined the academic world for some philosophical studies until the graduation from Theological department in 2003. During all that time I was working as gallery manager in a tiny hot glass studio in the historical Old Town of Tallinn. Obviously, all this experience of art, history, ancient languages and religion was as far from seafaring as anyone could imagine. Although having spent most of my childhood summer holidays by the sea, I was super uncomfortable with actually being on board a ship and could take on a few hours ferry ride only with the help of a pint. Or two.

Why we sail
Before the bright white hulls and the New Year’s celebration at St Barth, before Beluga and Starlink, there was a reason.
Someone stood at the edge of the water and felt something – a pull, an inexplicable, almost irrational desire to cast off the lines, to trust the wind and to go, against logic and disregarding safety because the human spirit demanded it.

That is why we sail and we learned to love the sea.

Yet somewhere between the first wooden boats and today’s superyachts, a shift happened. The “why”– that original, elemental impulse – was gradually eclipsed by the “what” and the “how” and “who”, followed by performance metrics, delivery schedules and legacy hierarchies built less on purpose than on precedent.

Today, the superyacht industry stands at its own crossroads, not on the water, but within itself. A new generation has arrived at the dock. They are talented, connected and unafraid. The question that now hangs in the salt air is not whether they are ready to sail, it’s whether the industry is ready to let them take the helm.

As many things in life, the start of my sea career was accidental. Matters of the heart took me traveling between Estonia and Finland and although scared of sea, I accepted a position on board a little cruise ship sailing between the two counties. My sea career started off in commercial shipping on passenger ferry boats and this was soon followed by working with High Speed Crafts. My last commercial job in 2008 was Head of Interior in Oman, where I was part of an infrastructure development project for the Sultanate, setting up a luxury passenger service.
